Foundations

Foundation Planning and Construction

The purpose of a home’s foundation is to bear the weight of the home, as well as provide a level base for construction and keep the home’s wood-based materials from coming in contact with the ground, causing rot. Foundations may be made of stone, brick, or concrete, which is by far the most popular foundation. They’re usually embedded a couple of meters into the earth. There are also three main types of foundations. The first is the raised perimeter foundation, which supports floors and the load-bearing walls. Other foundations are built on a slab of concrete. The last type of foundation is a series of concrete piers. Concrete foundations, the most common variety used, are made in three ways depending on the type of support that’s required. The first is the poured concrete foundation. There’s also concrete blocks and post-and-pier foundations.

The foundation is one of the most important aspects of your home, protecting it from water leaking into and under your home and keeping your home’s stucture sound. A lot of work goes into the design and building of a foundation for a home or building and may involve structural engineers and geotechnical engineers that will consider factors such as scour and frost heave, which have to do with the water in the ground around the foundation. Proper care and repairing of a home’s foundation is key to a long-lasting home.
